Learn Music Your Way

Ukulele, Guitar and Bass Lessons for players of all levels

Learn in a way that empowers progress in your own direction and at your own speed.

I believe that music is a fundamental and enriching experience that everyone should have access to.

I acknowledge that everyone learns differently and that by harnessing these differences teaching and learning can be more effective and more enjoyable.

My goal is to provide guidance and instruction to help you get the most satisfaction, progression and self-assurance out of your learning.

I teach highly adaptive music lessons that prioritize enjoyment and creativity.

I meet too many people who tell me they wished they learned to play an instrument when they were younger but never got the chance. Well, here is that chance.

I teach all ages but specialize in adult learners. Whether your motivation is personal, performative or just to play, I’m here to provide all the guidance and support you need to reach your musical goals.

What I Provide

  • Personalisation.

I look at the way you interact with an instrument and cater lessons to your skill level and style. This enables you to explore your instrument in your way while still learning fundamental musical ideas that will progress your playing.

  • Adaptability.

I endeavor to help you play the music you want to be playing, whether that’s by simplifying a complex song, adding complexities to an easier song, creating you own music or getting you to a level where you can do all of the above with ease.

  • Support.

I provide a warm and supportive learning environment. I believe creating a trusting and encouraging space is one of the greatest assets for teaching effectively. I also believe learning music should be enjoyable and exciting. If not, what’s the point?

I use up to date streaming and video conferencing technology to provide dedicated one on one lessons.

How I Teach

I teach using The Kauri Model. This philosophy divides teaching into four main principles based on the different parts of the Kauri tree - each representing a separate aspect of the teaching process.

This model was developed by myself and fellow students during the completion of my studies for He Puawai certificate in Adult & Tertiary Teaching with Te Wananga o Aotearoa.

This model was the result of research, discussion, and the personal experiences of each educator in our group. It represents the ideas and methods that we as teachers found to be most effective in supporting learning and teaching.

  • The Roots

The roots represent preparation and foundation.

Only with a strong foundation is growth possible.

  • The Trunk

The trunk represents strength and connection.

Only by providing support can growth happen.

  • The Epiphytes

The Epiphytes represent the ability to assist others.

Only with strength in ourselves are we able to help others grow.

  • The Canopy

The canopy represents support and security.

Only in a welcoming environment can growth be encouraged.

“Joe taught me guitar for a few months and I can attest to the fact that he is an excellent teacher. He tailored the lessons to my level and my tastes in music. He made sure that every lesson was fun while ensuring that I was progressing at a steady pace.

I highly recommend Joe to anyone that wants to learn guitar and have a good time while doing so. He is extremely gifted and I can assure you that you will not regret having him as a teacher!”
